The project

Grammage is our eco-design audit tool. It opens a website in a real browser, measures what each page actually downloads, then derives a score out of 100 and an estimate of its CO₂.

It also plugs into companies’ CI/CD, the pipeline that puts their website online, to check its scores at every deployment, and it certifies the result with a verified badge. We built everything in-house, from the logo to the website, the tool itself and its API.

Discover Grammage

The logo had to say two things: that we measure, and that it is light. We tried scales, too heavy, then a CO₂ cloud, too gloomy, before keeping the gauge, which we redrew with a pen and to which we added a leaf.

The name is set in Irish Grover, a typeface as round as the leaf, and it is drawn as outlines in the logo, so that visitors do not have to load the font.

The method

Grammage measures every page with a fixed protocol, always the same, so that two measurements can be compared. Each page runs three times, on mobile and on desktop, and the report keeps the median value.

  1. Step 1, Loading

The page opens in a real browser, with no window, as it would for a visitor.

  2. Step 2, Waiting for calm

Grammage waits for the page to finish working after loading, fifteen seconds at most.

  3. Step 3, Scrolling

It goes down screen by screen to the bottom, to load everything that waits until you get close.

  4. Step 4, Observation

For five seconds, it keeps counting everything that arrives, a rotating carousel for example.

  5. Step 5, The return visit

It comes back to the page to measure what it downloads again although it is already cached.

The technology

The tool is written in TypeScript and run directly by Node 24, with no build step. Playwright drives a windowless Chromium, paired with a DevTools protocol session to record every byte transferred, the DOM and the computing time, and the carbon is calculated by CO2.js, with the SWD v4 model.

The getgrammage.com website is built with Astro, and its attestation pages display the results signed by Grammage.

Grammage opens your website as a visitor would and counts everything it downloads, byte by byte, then converts that weight into grams of CO₂ using a recognised calculation method.

The result is signed, so that nobody can alter it, and it appears on a public page that anyone can open to check a website’s badge.

The badge and its attestation

  1. The badge, at the bottom of the pageIt gives the carbon weight of the page and compares it with a similar website.
  2. The attestation, on clickA public page, with the “Verified by Grammage” seal and the details of the measurement, which anyone can open.
