The project

Isep’Eat helps Isep students find where to eat around their three campuses, NDC, NDL and Tivoli, by highlighting the restaurants that pay attention to their waste.

The project was born in 2023 at the Isep “Environment and Society” hackathon, which it won, then it grew into a real platform.

We designed its identity, then built the whole application, with a map, restaurant pages, offers, a comparison tool and an administration area, in French and in English.

The map

The map is the heart of the application. Students pick their campus, NDC, NDL or Tivoli, and see the restaurants around them, with their distance, their walking time and their closing time.

Filters narrow the list, from restaurants open now to vegetarian, takeaway or discounted options. A click on a restaurant draws the walking route from the campus and opens its page.

The Waste Score

Each restaurant gets a rating invented for the project, from A when it takes care of its waste to E when it still has a way to go, shown on its page to be read at a glance.

A, excellent

  • Packaging
  • Recycling
  • Use of plastic
  • Eco-responsible initiatives
The team visits each restaurant and looks at its waste management, then the score is recalculated with the ratings left by students.

During the night

Part of the work is done automatically at night, while students sleep, thanks to scheduled tasks on the server.

  1. Task 1, Every hour

The popularity of each restaurant is recalculated with the latest visits and reviews.

  2. Task 2, 1 a.m.

The whole database is backed up.

  3. Task 3, 3 a.m.

The top 5 of each campus is updated.

  4. Task 4, 9 a.m.

Suggested restaurants and pending reviews are checked before they are published.

The technology

The application fits in a single Nuxt 4 project, the front end in Vue 3 and the API in Nitro. The data lives in MongoDB, Redis serves as a cache, Sharp prepares the photos, and the map relies on the TomTom web SDK.

The website is bilingual, its sitemap is generated automatically for search engines, and it displays the Grammage badge, which certifies its carbon weight.

The website and its back end form a single block, which makes it simple to evolve. Restaurants, reviews and photos are stored in a database, and the most viewed pages are kept in memory to display faster.

It can be read in French or in English, it is built to rank well on Google, and it is measured by Grammage, our tool that checks that a website stays light.

Designed for the phone

Between two classes, people look for a restaurant standing in the street, so everything is done with one thumb, from the map to the comparison tool.
